Dinosaurs Camp was a hit!

As I mentioned in the spring, we registered Owen for a dinosaurs camp at Springhill Preschool.  We were a little worried Owen wouldn’t stay as we would be taking Brandon with us but it was Brandon that was more upset.  Owen was fine to go on his own, but Brandon was quite upset that he didn’t get to stay with Owen.  There was a theme each day and if it was sunny and warm the kids got to play in the sprinkler at the end of class.  It was a morning class, ending just in time for lunch.  We spent the mornings with Brandon, one morning we met up with Tonya and Brooke for some playtime at Let’s Play, another morning we went to Toys R Us so Brandon could show us what kind of toys he would like for his birthday, then we did some errands the other mornings.

Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate as well as we had hoped, while the sun would come out and warm up, it would rain over the evening and night making everything outside damp and wet — meaning Owen and Brandon did not get to play in the playgrounds as much as we had all hoped.  We made due with the boys entertaining us indoors.

BBQing and cooking for Mom and Dad. Careful it’s hot!

Going to work, just like Mom and Dad!

Our Photo Session with Korsan Studios

We were in need of some new / updated photos of Owen and Brandon and since I know a very very good photographer…korsanstudios.com; I booked him for a session for Owen and Brandon.  We broke the photo session into two days, realizing that with a 3 yr old and almost 2 yr old our time of cooperation would be limited.  We tried to make things a little easier by choosing a location that the boys could have fun in — what better place than a playground.  The days we picked were during our bought of hot and humid weather with lots and lots of mosquito’s.  We chose an older playground built with wood beams to help keep the pictures remain classic.  It helped that the playground we picked also had an older brick built school right there.  We arrived bright and early, the temperature was not too hot just yet and if the boys stayed in the playground or concrete the mosquitoes seemed to leave us alone.  Morning is when the boys are in their best mood and so they were happy and eager to climb, swing and play.

In working with children Sean (and I) have learned that you need to take a lot of pictures and through all those pictures you will find a few of those gems that capture your children’s true self, true personality.

The soother is finally a thing of the past

It’s the beginning of August and Owen is finally rid of his soother.  Over the past year we have been slowly moving him away from it, to the point that he was now just getting his soother at naptime and bedtime and was down to only one soother.  One evening, Owen and Brandon were in the bathtub, Grandma K was washing their hair and brushing their teeth; I was getting their beds ready, pj’s out and story books ready for bedtime when I walked into Owen’s room to find Ruggles (Grandma K’s dog) chewing on something on the floor.  Thinking it was only his paw, I nudged him and when he scrambled to get up I found Owen’s last soother, chewed into two pieces.  Immediately I was thinking oh no, it was bedtime and Owen has no soother!  Grandma K and I talked to Owen while he was in the tub and explained what happened.  Owen seemed okay about it, but once he climbed into bed he asked — Mommy, did you fix my soother?  I explained again what happened and that there was no more soothers.  Owen needed some extra hugs that night.  Each night for about a week, Owen would ask if Mommy or Daddy had fixed his soother yet and each night Owen would need some extra hugs.  He transitioned from his soother surprisingly well and now doesn’t even give it a second thought.

Grandma K felt so bad about the whole thing that the next day we all went to Build A Bear so Owen and Brandon could both create their own bedtime BIG boy teddies.  Owen picked a monkey, chose that it should roar like a dinosaurs and dressed him up just like Woody the Sheriff from Toy Story.  Brandon picked a bear, chose that it should also roar like a dinosaurs and dressed him up like an Oilers Hockey player.  And I might add, Grandma K tried her best to get Brandon to pick Montreal Canadians over Edmonton Oilers but she couldn’t fool him!!

Owen and Brandon very much love their new bedtime teddies!

Capital Ex

Time sure does fly.  Since Owen and Brandon have started day care, they have come home with their share of colds that they have passed on to Mom and Dad.  And when Mom and Dad are sick, the website suffers!  Here I am trying to play catch up.

At the end of July we took the boys to Capital Ex.  Last year Aunty Claudette and I took Owen and Brandon, Owen loved it and Brandon was still quite young and spent most of his time sleeping.  This year Daddy and Grandma and Grandpa H came as well with Aunty Claudette and I.  We first took in Shrek at the Telus Stage – Owen and Brandon were pretty amazed to see Shrek and Fiona but were also disappointed to not see Donkey or Puss In Boots.  The military were there and Owen and Brandon enjoyed sitting in a real airplane! We visited the pony rides, where Owen rode all on his own and Brandon held onto Daddy as he was a little unsure about this moving horse.

We went through the Farm House again this year, with Brandon joining in too!  Owen and Brandon looked too cute with their little aprons, feeding the animals and riding the tractors.

After all that we did some rides.  Owen and Brandon very much enjoyed the rides.  They went on almost all the ones they could….the roller-coaster, car and helicopter, dizzy dinosaurs, Ferris wheel and a mirror house.

They went all day and did amazingly well with skipping their naps.  We were there when the mid-way opened and left just as the evening crowd was arriving.  The traffic was awful and by the time we got home it was bath-time and bed-time…which worked out perfectly.  The weather was great, overcast with a little rain.  It sure beats the +30 day we had last year!

Backyard Project….helping hands

Our yard is a work in progress.  It started out as a deck and grass and each year is slowly changing.  We wanted to see first what would grow where and how the yard was used before we did anything.  We discovered that we get a lot of wind and blazing hot sun, our grass needs lots and lots of water as the wind and sun help keep it dry, as well with the slight sloping yard all the water ends up at the bottom of the yard.  We love our deck, the size, the glass panels, the decking material.  It’s now onto the yard, the vast space of grass that we just don’t use.  Last year we added some Swedish Aspen’s along the one side the yard and a Japanese Lilac Tree to help create a screen from the street and green space behind us and shade from the sun….down the road.  The Swedish Aspen’s are fast growing and drought and disease tolerant.  The lilac tree grows a little more slowly but will create shade in the yard and beautiful flowering blossoms.  This year we talked it through and have a couple more projects for the yard…once we figured out what would be involved we decided to do the smaller of the two this year and start the larger project next spring.

Our smaller project is to cut out the grass from around the Swedish Aspen’s and along the back fence, put in some large bark chips, add a vegetable garden, a tree and a strawberry “field”.  Slowly over weekends and some evenings we accomplished our project.  We built a raised bed for my vegetable garden with ROXproduct, it is a rock product that is made to look a little more like natural rock and since it is more natural you can get away with it not being perfectly straight, etc.  We also used the ROX edging product around the whole area and it finishes it off quite nicely.  We found a beautiful Flaming Maple tree and I can’t wait for the leaves to change and see the wonderful colors.  I transplanted my strawberry plants from pots to the ground, in my strawberry “field” and boy was that hard frustrating work.  The strawberry plant had grown so well that all the runners were all tangled into each other; it took much patience and grumbling to get it out and into the ground….thank goodness I did that part on my own. ha ha  The finishing touch came when my Mom and sis, Jodi, helped me move my lily’s from the front flower bed to the new back flower section.  I love lily’s — I love how resilient they are, how hardy they are and the beautiful colors but they were just overtaking my small flower bed and needed more room to grow.  My mom also graciously gave me some Iris’ to add to the mix.  I am looking for more perennial flowers — anyone know any good ones?!

Once the rain stops I will take a few pictures of the new backyard for everyone to see.  I am very proud of it, it turned out exactly as I had envisioned it.  Big thanks to everyone that helped out — Sean, Aunty Claudette, Grandma and Grandpa H, Grandma K, GG (with her words of advise) and Jodi.  Owen and Brandon throughly enjoyed putting on their working clothes, digging in the dirt and making sure all the dirt went into the wheelbarrow.  Now Owen and Brandon want to work in the dirt everyday; they are quite upset that the work is all done.  Wait till next year boys!!

More Dress Up

Dress up is so much fun.  But dress up for boys is tough, it is hard to find good dress up clothes for boys – why does it all have to include guns and swords and fighting??  For Owen’s 3rd birthday Aunty Darlene found a policeman and fireman dress up sets and ever since Owen and Brandon equally enjoy dressing up and pretending to be firemen and policemen.

To mix things up a bit, I pulled out the boys “old” Halloween costumes and they thoroughly enjoyed pretending to be a dragon (and a monkey — unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough with the camera). Dress up is one time when both Owen and Brandon LOVE to pose for the camera! Owen will even ask “Do you wanna take a picture?” Brandon enjoyed the dragon costume so much, he ate lunch in it, read books in it and even helped to vacuum the main floor in it.

I Do Myself…Brandon

Brandon is at that perfect age where is wants to do everything himself and gets so upset and frustrated when it doesn’t work that it is hard to keep a straight face.  After bath time one night Brandon decided he wanted to go outside; with no shoes he headed out (Mommy close behind).  Brandon found the wagon and decided he was big enough to pull it around the driveway; of course when Mommy went to help Brandon pull the wagon out, Mommy got a “No Mommy I do it myself” and a frown.  Okay okay, he grunted and frowned and got upset but he got the wagon out and around so he could pull it down the driveway.  Brandon spent quite some time just working with the wagon, figuring out how when you move it this way or that it would go in different directions.  I mostly just sat and watched, as any interference from Mommy was very upsetting.

Owen finally decided he needed to see what was going on and joined us outside.  Brandon shared the wagon with Owen…well by then he had lost interest and noticed the water hose and nozzle and was checking that out.

I think sometimes I lose sight of the fact that Brandon still needs time to learn and discover, Brandon spends so much of his time following behind his brother that he doesn’t get a lot of chances to figure things out on his own.  Sitting and watching Brandon figure out the wagon reminded me of days when I would sit and watch Owen, when Owen was Brandon’s age.  After this evening I have tried very hard to give Brandon more space and time to discover on his own.

A few days at home with Daddy

Well the boys made it not quite two weeks at the day care before they caught their first virus that kept them home.  Owen woke from his nap over a weekend with a rash over his body.  I attributed it to heat rash as it had been a hot week and both boys had spent a lot of time outside.  There was no fever or change in appetite or lethargy and it wasn’t itchy, Owen was completely normal except for the rash.  Monday morning he woke and still had the rash, hummm….now children cannot attend day care with an undiagnosed skin rash.  This meant that Brandon could go but someone had to stay home with Owen until we got him into the doctor.  Sean had a few Family Care days left; mine were all used up from the H1N1 virus last fall and was able to stay home with Owen.  I think Dad quite enjoyed his day home with Owen, they built train tracks and raced trains, went to Tim Horton’s and then did the doctor duty too. The doctor said it was merely a viral rash and that once the rash appeared it was no longer contagious.  It was pretty normal  to see in children just starting in a day care or school.  Since Owen’s rash had progressed to his face, the doctor advised that Owen should stay home until it clears from his face, that meant anther day home with Dad.  By Wednesday the “spots” were all gone and Owen was very excited to go to day care and see his friends.

Wednesday morning the day care called and now Brandon had the rash.  Same deal, Brandon must be diagnosed by a doctor before he could return to day care.  I picked Owen and Brandon up from day care that day and got off easy, as they boys both napped all afternoon.  We found with Brandon he seemed a little more tired than usual and a little more cranky but at his age there were a long list of reasons for this outside of the rash. Thursday Daddy got to stay home with Brandon, using up his last Family Care day, and again enjoyed the day with just Brandon, building train tracks and stacking towers and then watching them fall and of course doing the doctor duty….again.  Same old story from the doctor, Owen gave the rash to Brandon, the plus side of it was that both boys are now immune to this rash!

By Friday both Owen and Brandon were at day care together.  Owen was excited that his brother’s “spots” were gone and that he’d have his brother with him at day care to play with.

Playing in the rain

We had an interesting week in July where it was gloomy and rainy and then in the evenings it would pour rain!  We finally picked up raincoats for the boys and after watching the rain out the family room window they looked back at us and said….can we go out on the deck?  Sean and I looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders, why not?  They dressed in their new dinosaurs rain coats and batman and spider-man rain boots and headed out into the rain.  The sand and water table was now full of water and they took turns splashing.  They stopped once for a snack, mini-cucumber from the Farmers Market, asking if they could eat outside….again Sean and I shrugged out shoulders, why not?  They snacked out in the rain and enjoyed every rain drop!

Mommy’s Birthday

Birthdays are so much more fun with kids!  Owen and Brandon make opening cards and eating cake and singing a whole new experience.  They got quite a few days of singing to their Mom…with Uncle Derek, Aunty Colette, Zoe and Grandma and Grandpa H, with Grandma K, Aunty Claudette, Uncle Phil and GG and then again with Daddy, Mommy and Brandon.  And of course after the singing of Happy Birthday waiting for the cake to be sliced takes FOREVER, thus Owen and Brandon get creative.

As part of my birthday present I had a couple evenings out, one evening to shop for myself in peace and quiet with no time restriction – ahh what bliss!  And then another evening out with my good friend Carrie for dinner at Earls and their outstanding hamburger and then not any movie, but Eclipse, the third in the Twilight series.  While I had my evenings out, Grandma K and Aunty Claudette had their evenings at home with Owen and Brandon.  Aunty brought out the play-dough and was a hit; they made all kinds of  pasta and many many meatballs…in Owen and Brandon’s books, this is the only meal!
