I Do Myself…Brandon

Brandon is at that perfect age where is wants to do everything himself and gets so upset and frustrated when it doesn’t work that it is hard to keep a straight face.  After bath time one night Brandon decided he wanted to go outside; with no shoes he headed out (Mommy close behind).  Brandon found the wagon and decided he was big enough to pull it around the driveway; of course when Mommy went to help Brandon pull the wagon out, Mommy got a “No Mommy I do it myself” and a frown.  Okay okay, he grunted and frowned and got upset but he got the wagon out and around so he could pull it down the driveway.  Brandon spent quite some time just working with the wagon, figuring out how when you move it this way or that it would go in different directions.  I mostly just sat and watched, as any interference from Mommy was very upsetting.

Owen finally decided he needed to see what was going on and joined us outside.  Brandon shared the wagon with Owen…well by then he had lost interest and noticed the water hose and nozzle and was checking that out.

I think sometimes I lose sight of the fact that Brandon still needs time to learn and discover, Brandon spends so much of his time following behind his brother that he doesn’t get a lot of chances to figure things out on his own.  Sitting and watching Brandon figure out the wagon reminded me of days when I would sit and watch Owen, when Owen was Brandon’s age.  After this evening I have tried very hard to give Brandon more space and time to discover on his own.
